If someone wants to take off on a long journey while carrying along their extended family and all their luggage, not many cars around can perform the job with as much aplomb as Toyota's brilliant multi purpose vehicle, the Innova. On sale for quite a few years now, the vehicle has been refreshed recently to give it a new lease of life and increase its desirability.
The biggest and most immediately noticeable change can be found at the front. The narrow grille has been binned in favour of a significantly larger, love it or hate it chrome grille. The bumper too has been a subject of remodelling as the air dam and fog lamps are different from the previous generation Innova. The fog lamps themselves are now surrounded with a chrome lip. The modifications at the back are less considerable; there now is a thick strip of chrome running almost the entire breadth of the car above the license plate. Along with the new pair of reflectors, the rear of the car looks more aesthetic now.
The new Toyota Innova remains mechanically untouched and it will be powered either by the same, refined and familiar 2.5 litre, 101 bhp, D4D diesel engine or the 2.0 litre, 130 bhp, VVT petrol engine. Both of these will be mated to a smooth 5 speed manual gearbox. Additionally, double wishbone suspension at the front and four link suspension at the rear together combined with 15" tubeless tyres make highway drives a breeze. The G and the V variants of this car come in both 7 and 8 seater versions but it must be noted that the top of the line Z variant can only be purchased as a 7 seater.
Features on the Toyota Innova 2013 are also good for a car in its segment. The car gets electrically adjustable rear view mirrors (the higher variants also get integrated turn indicators), rear wiper and demister, 12 volt DC power outlet, rear seat air-conditioning, power steering, power windows, keyless entry, a driver side airbag and ABS. The top end variants are provided with even more toys such as alloy wheels, dual front airbags, automatic air conditioner, rear parking camera, fog lamps, multi function steering wheel, wood-like interior finishing, rear spoiler and a multi information display.
Buyers can order their face-lifted Innova in any of the 5 metallic paint schemes - Blue, Silver Mica, Silky Gold Mica, Dark Red Mica, Grey Mica or Super White non-metallic colour. The Toyota Innova price bracket ranges between Rs. 11 lakhs and Rs. 18 lakhs and for that money, you get a car that's versatile and extremely practical. For a significant chunk of car buyers, that's all that matters. Toyota has been clever enough to massively and successfully take advantage of this fact and the rewards have been flowing in right from day one.
